Is That Summer Sports Injury More Than Just a Sprain? When to Get an X-Ray or MRI

Summer in Buffalo and Western New York brings more than warm weather — it’s also peak season for outdoor sports and recreational activities. Whether it’s pickup basketball, running, biking, hiking, or softball leagues, people of all ages are more active this time of year. But with increased activity comes a higher risk of injury, and what seems like a minor sprain could actually be something more serious.

At Great Lakes Medical Imaging (GLMI), we help patients and physicians get answers fast with advanced imaging like X-rays and MRIs. Knowing when to escalate from rest and ice to diagnostic imaging is key to avoiding long-term complications and speeding up recovery.

Common Summer Sports Injuries

During the summer, we see an uptick in injuries caused by high-impact and high-repetition activities. Common injuries include:

  • Sprained ankles
  • Knee pain or swelling (meniscus or ligament damage)
  • Shoulder pain (rotator cuff or labrum injuries)
  • Wrist or hand injuries from falls
  • Stress fractures from overuse or poor footwear
  • Muscle strains and tendonitis

While many injuries heal with conservative treatment, others — like fractures, torn ligaments, or cartilage damage — can worsen without proper diagnosis and care. That’s where imaging comes in.

When Should You Get an X-Ray?

X-rays are typically the first imaging step when a bone injury is suspected. They’re fast, low-radiation, and effective at identifying fractures, dislocations, or bone misalignment.

You should consider an X-ray if:

  • You heard a crack or felt a pop at the time of injury
  • You’re unable to bear weight or use the limb after a day or two
  • There is visible swelling, bruising, or deformity
  • You’ve experienced significant trauma or a fall

X-rays are also useful for follow-up imaging to confirm that a bone is healing properly after a break or fracture.

When Should You Get an MRI?

Unlike X-rays, which only show bones, an MRI provides detailed images of soft tissues — such as ligaments, tendons, muscles, and cartilage. It’s the gold standard for evaluating joint pain, chronic injuries, and non-healing sprains.

Get an MRI if:

  • You’ve had persistent pain for more than 1–2 weeks without improvement
  • You’ve had multiple sprains or recurring joint instability
  • Your pain worsens with activity but doesn't improve with rest
  • Your physician suspects a ligament tear, tendon injury, or cartilage damage

For example, an MRI can detect an ACL tear in the knee, rotator cuff damage in the shoulder, or a meniscus tear — all of which may not appear on an X-ray.

Why Imaging Is Critical for Athletes of All Ages

Whether you're a high school athlete, a weekend warrior, or just enjoy staying active during the summer months, proper diagnosis is key to safe recovery. Continuing to play through an undiagnosed injury can lead to:

  • More severe damage requiring surgery
  • Permanent joint instability or reduced mobility
  • Delayed healing and longer time away from activity

With timely imaging, your provider can recommend the right course of treatment — whether it's physical therapy, bracing, rest, or in some cases, surgery. Getting a clear picture of the injury helps everyone make informed, effective decisions.
