X-ray/Fluoroscopy

X-ray images help physicians detect disease at early stages, reduce need for exploratory surgery, and improve precision when surgery is needed. High-quality images are obtained with the help of a small amount of radiation in order to capture shadows and reflections on photographic or digital plates.

What to expect

During the exam, you may be asked to hold your breath or remain perfectly still. Some X-rays require a contrast agent, and you may be asked to drink a solution immediately before the X-rays are taken. After initial review, additional X-rays may be required before you leave. Please do not wear clothing or jewelry containing metal.

Fluoroscopy (Bariatric)

Great Lakes Medical Imaging now accommodates a broader spectrum of patients with its Siemens Luminos Agile fluoroscopy machine, located in Williamsville at our Park Club Lane location. Technologists can now adjust the height of the table, which offers an open design for patients with limited mobility. Its modern design allows imaging of a wide coverage area in a single procedure.

What is fluoroscopy?

Fluoroscopy is an enhanced x-ray imaging technique that captures moving images of your internal system on a specially developed monitor by taking a continuous series of images at a very fast rate.

What will I experience during fluoroscopy?

• You will be instructed to drink different thicknesses of a radiopaque solution throughout the course of the procedure.
• You will be asked to lie down on the scanning table, where a special camera will move slowly over the areas of your body that require imaging. The camera will never touch your body.
• You will be asked to remain still for the duration of the procedure.
• You may be asked to hold your breath during certain parts of the procedure to ensure images are as clear as possible
• You will be able to communicate with the technologist throughout the procedure.
• If you are having an upper GI, esophagram or small bowel follow-through, abstain from eating or drinking eight hours prior to exam.

DO

• If you are scheduled for a barium enema exam, please contact our staff for specific preparation information at least 48 hours prior to your appointment.
• Wear clothing that is easy to remove. You may be asked to change into a gown.
• Please notify our staff prior to scheduled exam if you: are pregnant or breast-feeding, or if you experience dizziness or light-headedness when lying down or getting up.
• Please empty your bladder before your exam begins unless otherwise instructed by your doctor.
• Please bring any relevant films and reports from previous exams.

DO NOT

• Do not wear jewelry, piercings or removable dental work.
• Do not take blood thinners for all arthrograms and pain injections five days prior to exam
