What to Expect During Your First Ultrasound or CT Scan
![]()
Scheduling your first imaging appointment can bring up a lot of questions. Will it hurt? How long will it take? What happens during the test? Whether you’re having an ultrasound or a CT scan, knowing what to expect can make the experience easier and less stressful.
At GLMI, we’re committed to making every imaging appointment a comfortable, transparent, and reassuring process. With convenient locations in Williamsville, Cheektowaga, Orchard Park, and Cambria, we’ve helped countless Western New York patients feel at ease during their first scan. Here’s what you can expect before, during, and after your ultrasound or CT exam.
Understanding the Difference Between Ultrasound and CT Scans
Both ultrasound and CT imaging are powerful diagnostic tools, but they work in different ways:
- Ultrasound: Uses sound waves to create real-time images of organs, tissues, and blood flow. It’s completely safe, painless, and doesn’t involve radiation. It’s often used for evaluating the abdomen, pelvis, thyroid, or blood vessels, as well as during pregnancy.
- CT (Computed Tomography) Scan: Uses low-dose X-rays and advanced computer technology to capture detailed cross-sectional images of your body. It’s commonly used to examine the lungs, bones, heart, or internal organs and provides more detail than a standard X-ray.
Both types of imaging play a vital role in detecting, diagnosing, and monitoring a wide range of health conditions — from vascular concerns to organ health and beyond.
Before Your Appointment
Proper preparation helps ensure the most accurate imaging results. When you schedule your exam, the GLMI team will give you clear instructions specific to your test.
Preparing for an Ultrasound
- You may be asked to drink water and avoid urinating before your appointment if your exam involves the pelvis or bladder. A full bladder improves image clarity.
- For abdominal ultrasounds, you might need to fast for several hours to minimize interference from gas or digestion.
- Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. In some cases, you’ll change into a gown for easier access to the area being scanned.
Preparing for a CT Scan
- Some CT exams use contrast dye to enhance visibility of internal structures. If so, you may be asked to avoid eating or drinking for several hours beforehand.
- Be sure to inform the technologist if you have allergies, kidney concerns, or have previously reacted to contrast materials.
- Remove jewelry, glasses, or metal objects that could interfere with imaging.
- Wear comfortable clothing — you may be provided with a gown depending on the type of scan.
If you have any questions before your exam, you can always call GLMI for clarification. Our staff will ensure you’re fully prepared and comfortable before you arrive.
During Your Ultrasound
Ultrasound exams are painless and non-invasive. Here’s what typically happens:
- You’ll be escorted into a quiet exam room and asked to lie on a padded table.
- The technologist will apply a warm, water-based gel to your skin. This gel helps the transducer (a small handheld probe) make direct contact and transmit sound waves effectively.
- The technologist will gently move the transducer over the targeted area. You may feel light pressure, but no pain.
- As the sound waves bounce off your internal structures, images appear instantly on the screen.
The entire process usually takes between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on the type of exam. Once it’s complete, the gel is wiped away, and you can immediately resume your normal activities.
During Your CT Scan
A CT scan is also quick, comfortable, and non-invasive. Here’s what to expect:
- After checking in, a technologist will bring you to the scanning room and review the process with you.
- You’ll lie on a narrow table that slides gently into the CT machine — a large, donut-shaped scanner.
- If contrast dye is required, it may be given through an IV in your arm just before the scan begins. You might feel a brief warm sensation or metallic taste, which passes quickly.
- During the scan, you’ll hear soft whirring or clicking sounds as the machine captures images. The technologist will monitor you from a nearby control room and communicate through an intercom.
- It’s important to stay still for a few seconds at a time to ensure sharp, accurate images.
The scan itself usually takes 10–15 minutes, and most patients can leave right afterward unless they’ve received sedation (which is rare).
After Your Appointment
After either an ultrasound or CT scan, you can return to your usual routine right away. If you received contrast dye, your technologist will recommend drinking extra water throughout the day to help your body flush it out.
Your images will be reviewed by a board-certified radiologist, and results will be sent directly to your referring physician. Your doctor will then discuss the findings and next steps with you.
Tips for a Comfortable Experience
- Arrive early: Give yourself time to check in, relax, and ask questions before your scan.
- Wear loose clothing: Comfort helps you stay relaxed and still during your exam.
- Communicate openly: Tell your technologist if you’re nervous or have any concerns — they’re there to help.
- Focus on your breathing: Deep, steady breaths can help calm nerves and keep you comfortable.
- Remember — it’s quick: Most imaging exams are over in less than 30 minutes, and they provide valuable information to guide your health care.
