The Importance of Following Prep Instructions Before a Scan

The Importance of Following Prep Instructions Before a Scan | GLMI

When your doctor orders an imaging test, the results depend on more than just the technology — they depend on you. Following your scan preparation instructions carefully is one of the most important steps you can take to ensure accurate, safe, and effective results.

At GLMI, we want every patient to have a smooth experience and clear, reliable results. Whether you’re scheduled for an ultrasound, CT scan, PET/CT, or another imaging exam, following your preparation instructions is essential for the best possible outcome.

Why Preparation Matters

Imaging scans rely on clear, consistent conditions to capture accurate pictures of what’s happening inside your body. Even small changes — such as eating too soon before a scan or wearing metal jewelry — can affect image quality and make results harder to interpret.

Proper preparation helps:

  • Ensure image accuracy by reducing interference or motion artifacts
  • Enhance safety by identifying allergies or sensitivities to contrast agents
  • Save time by preventing the need to reschedule or repeat scans
  • Improve diagnosis by giving radiologists the clearest view possible

When you follow prep instructions closely, you’re helping your care team deliver the most precise and reliable diagnostic information.

Different Scans Require Different Preparations

Each type of imaging test has its own preparation guidelines based on how the scan works and what area of the body is being examined. Below are common examples of preparation steps for various imaging services at GLMI.

1. Ultrasound

Because ultrasound uses sound waves to create images, preparation may depend on which part of the body is being examined.

  • Abdominal Ultrasound: You may be asked to fast for 6–8 hours before your appointment to reduce gas in the digestive tract, which can block sound waves.
  • Pelvic Ultrasound: You may be instructed to drink several glasses of water before the exam and avoid urinating so your bladder is full. A full bladder helps push the intestines aside, giving a clearer view of pelvic organs.
  • Vascular Ultrasound: Usually requires no fasting, but wearing loose clothing makes it easier for technologists to access the area being scanned.

2. Low-Dose CT Scans

CT scans use X-rays and sometimes contrast dye to produce detailed images. Preparation instructions depend on whether contrast will be used.

  • If your scan includes contrast, you may need to avoid eating or drinking for 4 hours before the exam.
  • Patients with kidney conditions or allergies should inform their doctor before scheduling to ensure contrast is safe to use.
  • Remove all metal objects, including jewelry, eyeglasses, and belts, before the scan.

Following these steps ensures that the images are clear and that contrast material, if used, can circulate safely through your system.

3. PET/CT Scans

PET/CT scans measure how your tissues and organs function. Because the test detects metabolic activity, what you eat beforehand matters significantly.

  • Most patients are asked to fast for 6 hours before the exam (water is usually permitted).
  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours before the scan to prevent false readings from increased muscle activity.
  • Diabetic patients will receive specific instructions for managing medications and meals before the exam.

Proper preparation helps the radiopharmaceutical tracer highlight only the areas of concern, giving doctors more accurate diagnostic insight.

4. Nuclear Medicine

Preparation for nuclear medicine tests varies depending on the organ or function being studied. Some tests require fasting, while others may require avoiding caffeine or certain medications before your scan. Always review your specific prep sheet carefully or contact your GLMI technologist if you have questions.

5. Bone Densitometry

For bone density scans, minimal preparation is needed. However, avoid taking calcium supplements for at least 24 hours before your exam, as they can interfere with imaging accuracy. Wear comfortable, metal-free clothing to make the process quick and easy.

What Happens If Prep Instructions Aren’t Followed

Even minor deviations from your prep instructions can impact image quality. For example, eating before a scan that requires fasting can cause your stomach or intestines to block the area being imaged, while failing to remove metal can create artifacts that obscure important details.

In some cases, scans may need to be rescheduled if proper preparation hasn’t been followed — not because of punishment, but to ensure patient safety and diagnostic accuracy. Following prep directions helps you avoid unnecessary delays and ensures your results are dependable.

How GLMI Helps Patients Prepare

General Tips for Any Imaging Appointment

  • Arrive at least 15 minutes early to complete paperwork and relax before your scan.
  • Bring a list of current medications and any allergies, especially to contrast dye or iodine.
  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing and avoid metal zippers, buttons, or jewelry.
  • Tell your technologist if you’re pregnant or think you might be — special precautions may apply.
  • Bring previous imaging results if performed elsewhere, so your physician can compare findings.

By preparing properly, you’ll help your radiologist and referring physician obtain the most accurate and useful information possible.
