Beyond Pregnancy: The Many Uses of Diagnostic Ultrasound

When most people hear the word ultrasound, they picture a grainy black and white image of a baby on a screen. That single association is so strong that many patients are surprised to learn how much more this technology can do. Ultrasound is one of the most versatile imaging tools in modern medicine, and it helps physicians look at a wide range of structures throughout the body, far beyond pregnancy.

What Is Diagnostic Ultrasound?
Ultrasound, also known as sonography, uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of muscles, tendons, and internal organs. A clear gel is applied to the skin, and the images are produced from the reflection of those sound waves as they bounce off the structures inside your body. Because the picture updates in real time, your physician can watch movement, blood flow, and function as they happen, not just a single still frame.
One of the biggest advantages of ultrasound is what it does not require. There is no contrast agent needed for a standard study, and the exam is both safe and painless. Since ultrasound relies on sound waves rather than ionizing radiation, it is often a first-line imaging choice and is used safely across all ages, from newborns to older adults. How an Ultrasound Exam Works
If you have never had an ultrasound, the process is straightforward and comfortable. During the exam, the technologist applies gel to the skin over the area being studied. The gel helps the sound waves travel smoothly between the device and your body. The technologist then slowly moves a hand-held wand, called a transducer, over the area being imaged. As the wand moves, the reflected sound waves are translated into the live images your physician will review.
Most studies are quiet and relaxed. You may be asked to hold still, take a breath, or change position slightly so the technologist can capture the best possible views. There are no needles for a standard imaging study, no loud machinery, and no recovery time afterward. You can typically return to your normal day right away.

Pelvic, transvaginal, follicle, and sonohysterogram studies support a range of gynecologic and fertility-related questions, and testicular ultrasound helps evaluate concerns in that area.
Thyroid ultrasound is a common study used to look closely at the thyroid gland in the neck, and when a closer tissue sample is needed, GLMI also performs thyroid biopsy with fine needle aspiration under ultrasound guidance. Musculoskeletal and soft tissue studies can help your provider examine muscles, tendons, and other soft structures, which is especially useful for active patients dealing with strains and overuse injuries common in our four-season Western New York climate.
Imaging Blood Flow With Doppler Ultrasound
One of the most powerful uses of ultrasound is studying how blood moves through your vessels. Doppler technology lets the system measure and display blood flow, which is invaluable for evaluating circulation. Carotid Doppler studies look at the arteries in the neck, while arterial Dopplers help evaluate flow in the arteries of the limbs.
On the vein side, venous Doppler and venous insufficiency studies help your provider assess how blood returns through the veins. These studies are often part of the workup for conditions related to veins and venous disease, while arterial Dopplers may support evaluation of peripheral arterial disease.
